About Us

The Washington-Baltimore Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group meets monthly from September through June to discuss various aspects of mass spectrometry. Meetings are open to everyone and do not require membership dues, thanks to the generosity of our corporate sponsors. Attendees commonly include research scientists and students from local government, academic, and industrial laboratories. A light dinner is served before each meeting, for which RSVPs are preferred but not required.

Meetings are usually held on the third Monday of each month (see schedule) at the Shimadzu Regional Training Center in Columbia, MD (directions) at 7:15 pm. Our meetings usually involve a lecture by an expert in the field of mass spectrometry and its related sciences from the area or outside the area.

The Washington-Baltimore MSDG has periodically conducted a short course entitled “Interpretation of Mass Spectra” at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry Meeting. Members of the discussion group serve as instructors for the course.

Topics of interest to the MSDG include, but are not limited to:

Instrumentation: Design and Implementation
Ion sources
Mass Separation Methods
Ion Detection
Fundamental Processes Important in Mass Spectrometry
Desorption and Ionization of Molecules
Activation and Fragmentation of Molecules
Ion-Molecule Reactions
Fundamental Studies Using Mass Spectrometry
Analytical Applications of Mass Spectrometry in:
Bioanalytical Chemistry
Environmental Chemistry
Organic Analysis
Inorganic Analysis
Surface Analysis
Space Sciences
